What is the difference between water-based PU leather and ordinary PU leather on the market?
To understand what water-based PU synthetic leather is, one must first understand the classification and structure of synthetic leather. PU synthetic leather is divided into two types: dry PU leather and wet PU leather.
To understand what water-based PU synthetic leather is, one must first understand the classification and structure of synthetic leather. PU synthetic leather is divided into two types: dry PU leather and wet PU leather.
Dry PU leather consists of four layers: base fabric, adhesive layer, surface layer, and surface treatment layer. Wet PU leather consists of five layers: base fabric, adhesive layer, foam layer, surface layer, and surface treatment layer. Wet PU leather has an additional foam layer compared to dry PU leather. The adhesive layer, foam layer, surface layer, and surface treatment layer of traditional solvent-based PU leather are all made of polyurethane (PU) chemical materials containing toxic solvents such as DMF. Water-based PU leather, however, uses water-based polyurethane as a raw material and uses water instead of toxic solvents such as DMF.
On the surface, it seems that the solvents such as DMF in the chemical materials have been replaced with water. However, from a scientific research perspective, qualitative changes have occurred in many aspects, from raw material selection and patented formulas to the process, equipment selection, etc. Compared with traditional solvent-based PU leather on the market, water-based PU leather is harmless to the body, non-toxic, odorless, and also reduces energy consumption during production, with no emission of toxic and harmful waste gas or wastewater. Therefore, it fully meets domestic and international environmental requirements for synthetic leather.
Water-based PU leather also has excellent physical properties, such as high peel strength, high flexural resistance, and high wear resistance, making it a superior alternative to genuine leather and traditional solvent-based synthetic leather. It is the designated leather for developed countries such as Europe, America, and Japan.
